- I have a very unusual communications problem. I recently bought a
- Motorola LifeStyle 28.8k external modem and a new J-656B Triton
- motherboard with integrated I/O and a Pentium/100 CPU. I've been using
- this setup for just over a week now.
-
- But I just noticed a very unusual problem today. Running Hyperterminal,
- I called a local BBS that uses a USR Courier V.34+ and I tried
- downloading a file. The download went fine but when I tried to PKUNZIP
- it, it had CRC errors; parts of the file were corrupt. I went to a
- different program (Telemate 4.20) and I called the BBS again and d/led
- the file - this time it went fine and I could properly PKUNZIP it. Now
- then, I tried downloading the file a third time using Hyperterminal.
- Once again, I couldn't PKUNZIP it. So I compared this particular file
- with the first one (which also had CRC errors) and to my surprise, the
- two files had slight differences. Although they were the same size, they
- were both corrupt in different regions.
-
- I called another BBS (one with a 14.4k modem) and the same problem
- arises. Note that this problem doesn't occur all the time -
- Hyperterminal receives some files without any problems. Also, although I
- haven't seen this problem occur with Telemate yet, I haven't used
- Telemate with the modem long enough to see if it's completely immune.
-
- BTW, I'm using my modem at 115200 bps (but I don't think that this should
- be a problem since I have a P5/100 and a 16550 UART on my serial port).
-
- Is this a hardware (modem or serial interface?) or software problem? Any
- suggestions?
